How To Choose The Top Putters Of All Time?

You should always consider the different features of putters. But before doing so, it would be best to look at your height, body structure, and playing preferences. Some golfers play with a Straight Putting Stroke. While some play with an Arcing Putting Stroke.

Types of Putters

Basically, there are two types of putters available. These are discussed below.

Best Putters Of All Time
  • Blade putters: A blade-type putter has a slight head that exactly looks like a knife. But many golfers like this type of putter because the putter provides more control as well as incredible distance. As the blade-type putter is longer and narrower, players require more strength to hit the ball into the hole. Moreover, due to the weight distribution between the heel and toe, players with an arc stroke prefer like Bobby Locke playing with the blade putter.
  • Mallet putters: A mallet putter provides extra stability and is heavier than a blade-style putter. On the other hand, it has a bigger and rounded shape. This type of putter gives a higher Moment of Inertia (MOI) that helps minimize the unfavorable effects on off-center shots. Because of having heft, the head of the mallet putters is kept grounded and lower during the stroke. You will be out of control if you use too much strength while hitting the ball. Golfers with straight putting strokes prefer playing with the mallet putter.

Features of Putters

  • Hosel: The shaft, along with the head combined, creates a bond near the hosel of the putter. There are various kinds of hosels available, from the plumber’s neck to the double bend. A hosel of a putter further allows the golfers to make a toe hang. As a result, the players will be able to hit an arc-like stroke.
  • Grip: There are various types of grips available for a putter. The three most common grips are pistol, standard, and oversized. Players with small hands will be suitable to hold the pistol grip because of its convenient and comfortable size. Besides, the skilled or the lower handicap players prefer to hold the oversized grip of the putter that further assists the pro golfers to enhance the MOI by minimizing the twisting while they take their stroke. The mid handicapper likes to play with the standard grip due to the medium size among these three grips.
  • Shaft: The standard length of a putter’s shaft is 34 inches. But in general, you will see the shafts between 33 inches to 35 inches long. If your height is less than 5’10”, then you can play with the 33 inches long shaft. On the other hand, if you are much taller, like more than 6 feet, it will be preferable for you to use the 35 inches long shaft. Due to using the long shaft, the taller players can comfortably play without bending.

Face Types

Every face of the putter is specifically designed to enhance your playability. Generally, there are two types of faces available for a putter.  Nevertheless, the insert face assists in getting you proper contact with the ball, and the milled face helps you get good control of kinetic energy.

  • Insert Face: When you hit the ball with an insert face of a putter, you will get a fine-tuned sound due to the vibration dampening. Aside from this, the insert face helps make a calm and smooth feel without preventing motion transfer when someone hits the ball. Additionally, it allows the head of the putter to be flexible at impact and circulate the weight on the external part of the head. As a result, magnificent stability and balance are achieved.
  • Milled Face: The milled putter is specially created to pass on spin and roll to the ball. You will achieve more directional efficiency with the more spin you will put on the ball. The milled putters are designed to increase the sweet spot of a putter or improve the off-center shots. The unique design of a milled face putter enhances the playability of high and mid-handicap golfers.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What are the procedures of taking care of putters after playing with them?

Firstly, use a soft cloth with better detergent or soap to wipe out the putter’s head. Then, dry the putter with another dry cloth, and watch the finish. If you think that it needs a little bit of shine, apply baby oil to it. Further, if you find any scratch on the head of the putter, then wash the head gently in the slow running water with a smooth cotton cloth. And, you can even paint the head a little bit with a small paint-brush if there is a requirement. Finally, keep the putter in a dry place and at normal room temperature.

2. What shaft length should I use?

Choose your shaft length according to your needs and preferences. But here is our suggestion – If your height is longer than 6 feet, it is preferable to use the 35 inches long shaft. But if you are lesser in height than 5’10”, then use the 33 inches long. On the other hand, it is suitable to use the 34 inches long shaft.

3. What type of putter should I use?

It exclusively depends on your playing style and preferences. Both the mallet and blade putters have their own advantages. While the blade putter provides more control and incredible distance, you require more strength to hit the balls. Players with an arc stroke prefer playing with the blade putter. On the other hand, a mallet putter provides extra stability and is heavier than a blade-style putter. Golfers with straight putting strokes prefer playing with the mallet putter. Besides, it gives a higher MOI that minimizes the unfavorable effects on off-center shots.
